Now, I Begin...

Wegovy.

For those unaware, Wegovy is also known as Ozempic. It's a diabetes medication that has been found in studies to reduce future heart events by 20% and acts as an appetite suppressant. Insurance companies in the US have begun covering Wegovy for use as a weight loss drug. My insurance company announced they would start covering it for those with both heart disease and obesity, and I started looking into it.

I'll be honest with you all, I have struggled with this decision. It's not been an easy one. I have a complicated history with diet culture wrapped up in complex feelings about my mother. One of my biggest joys in life is baking, and then eating what I've baked. But I also know that the trajectory I'm currently on is not helping my overall well-being.

My back has put a huge damper on the amount of exercise I can do; which led to weight gain; which puts more pressure on my already weakened heart, back, foot, and knees. I had a heart attack less than four years ago, but my back has me in such a sedentary lifestyle that I fear the ramifications of my inability to exercise as well as the weight gain will be that I lose all ability to walk.

After a long discussion with my doctor, she strongly recommended that I start taking it. And, I agreed.

Then, there was having to find it. Wegovy is super popular currently because it IS so effective as an appetite suppressant. Pharmacies are sold out all over. But, this morning, I found a pharmacy that had some, and they filled my prescription.

I'm nervous but I'm also excited.

This post will go live tomorrow morning 4/9/2024. By the time anyone reads it, I will have already taken my first shot. (It's a once-a-week injectable)

It is my intent to keep you all updated on how things are proceeding on Tuesdays. Shot day.

You should know:

I do not own a scale, nor will I be buying one.

I do not have a weight loss "goal" other than becoming more active with less pain.

I have to see my doctor once a month while I take this, she will be weighing me at those visits. I will keep you updated regarding weight loss numbers on those days.

I currently take two medications for blood pressure, and it is my hope to get off both.

I currently take one medication for cholesterol, and I hope to get off that one as well.

With my insurance, a one-month supply was $11.20.

This is a medicine they titrate up, so I'm starting on the lowest dose of 0.25 mg. That dose will rise after two months to 0.5mg. I've been told the "real" weight loss begins once you're on a maintenance dose of either 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg depending on tolerance to the medication.

They have to do this to slowly get your stomach used to the changes it's going to experience. I don't want to be bogged down with stomach issues, ya know?

It's in

It didn't hurt

Wish me luck!

  1. Good luck with your new medication and so hope all works well for you. I have seen the Ozempic commercials here and truly hope it stabilizes everything for you. Diabetes is rampant in my family. My Dad and most of his siblings had Juvenile diabetes. My slightly older sister has Type 2 diabetes along with my niece.. Hugs!

    1. Not that there's anything wrong with having diabetes, but I am not diabetic. Wegovy has been approved for "off label" use as a weight loss drug and as a way to lower the risk of future heart attacks. :)

Thank you for your well wishes.

      Hugs

    3. Good luck Deb. I am on Trulicity and it helps with appetite control for me but I also started doing intermitted fasting. The IF has been a game changer for me as far as my appetite control. I may not be losing a lot of weight due to either Friday or Saturday I do take some CBD gummies. The gummies help me with managing neck and shoulder discomfort but it opens up my appetite with the munchies. It's always a never ending battle.

    4. Thanks Mr Wrong. As an avid smoker of the ganga weed, I can tell you I don’t have that issue with wegovy. Sure I get munchies but the way this works on my brain, munchies are now a third of an apple sprinkled with cinnamon and I’m full (and needing another toke to settle my stomach).

    1. So far, I've definitely noticed the appetite decrease. No other side effects, though

  3. Have you noticed anything difference since your first injection? If so, I hope it's good rather than bad.

    1. Yup, all good. It is odd that I have to force myself to eat. I'm literally NEVER hungry. I drank a 10 oz garden smoothie last night for dinner and felt as full as if I'd eaten an entire Sunday dinner complete with dessert. That smoothie had carrots, snap peas, celery, papaya, blueberries, mulberries, spinach, and non fat Greek yogurt.

I have zero cravings for high fat foods which is a big deal, they're my weakness.

I think my REAL problem is going to be getting enough nutrients now. I'm going to have to do small snack size meals throughout the day and stick to whole grains, veggies, fruits, healthy fats and protein. And, probably set an alarm to remind myself to eat. I have also purchased a multivitamin just to be sure.

    2. That's good to hear.
Hopefully your garden will also supply you with lots of nutrients you need.

    3. Thanks. More and more is starting to come in so that will help.

  4. For some reason, I thought Wegovy/Ozempic was in pill form. Kinda surprised that it's an injection. How are things so far?

    1. I think they're coming out with a version that is pill form, but for now it's injectable.

I would say things are a success. I have no interest in high fat foods like chips, cookies, and cakes (my biggest weaknesses). I literally ate one piece of candy (a gummy) yesterday and was like..meh...and didn't want anymore. I have to force myself to eat, most of the time I'm not hungry. And, I have to be very mindful of portion size because I fill up quick.

I just ate 2 oz grilled chicken breast with quarter of a sliced English cucumber for dinner and I'm stuffed.
